Have you ever noticed how a three-foot putt seems a lot harder than a 20-foot putt or a drive on a narrow hole?
The reason why most amateurs miss those short putts and Tiger Woods made 1,057 in a row on tour is simple…there are only two variables that contribute to the ball going in the hole: alignment and speed. That's it.
As an instructor, I've had students tell me that they are horrible at three-footers. I then tell them I don't believe them and that they are not properly aligning themselves or they are not striking the ball into the hole.
The reasoning behind the high success rate of tour players on their shorter putts is that they take one of the two variables out of play. The harder you strike your putt, the less effect any type of slope will have on your ball. Amateurs tend to let the ball barely roll into the hole, allowing the slope of the green to greatly affect its outcome. Tour players on the other hand add additional speed and take any potential break out of the putt.
Here's a great drill to work on next time you're at CGC: make a circle with golf balls three feet from the hole and hit each putt and see how many go in. Then, place the balls in the same spot and putt each one with excessive speed. The ball should actually hit the back of the hole before it hits the bottom of the cup.
You will quickly build confidence by making more short putts and reducing your total putts per round!
