What's Your Lucky Number?

TaylorMade Golf now gives golfers the opportunity to customize their own TaylorMade TP Red and TP Black golf balls by emblazoning a two-digit number of their choosing, anything from 00 to 99. Called "My TP Ball," the program allows golfers to design their own golf balls in a new and individualized way. Golfers can create and view their own TaylorMade TP Red or TP Black balls by visiting myTPball.com. After selecting a ball and one of 110 possible two-digit number combinations, you can preview what your ball will look like. Any number from 00 to 99 is possible. Single digits from 0 to 9 are OK, too.

When you decide on a number, fill out the online order form, print it and bring it to the CGC pro shop and we'll place your order with TaylorMade. They will be shipped to you within seven days. The minimum order of TaylorMade TP balls with personalized number is three dozen.

Makes a great gift for yourself or your favorite golfer!

Congrats to our
CGC Club Champion

Above: CGC Head Professional Kathy Wake (right) presents the winner's trophy to 2008 CGC Club Champion Scott Devitt.

Congratulations to Scott Devitt, our 2008 CGC Club Champion!

Our largest group of competitors ever turned out for a fun, challenging afternoon round at El Camino Country Club in Oceanside on July 27.

Scott shot an 84 gross, net par 72 over 18 holes to narrowly defeat a tough field. Marshall Joliffe also shot an 84 to tie for low gross, but was edged out by a few strokes for the title.

Scott is now eligible to represent our club at the SCGA Tournament of Champions later this year.

Our club membership continues to grow and you can join at any time!

Putting drills and how to execute the 3-footer!
A Quick Tip from Instructor Paul Weber

Have you ever noticed how a three-foot putt seems a lot harder than a 20-foot putt or a drive on a narrow hole?

The reason why most amateurs miss those short putts and Tiger Woods made 1,057 in a row on tour is simple…there are only two variables that contribute to the ball going in the hole: alignment and speed. That's it.

As an instructor, I've had students tell me that they are horrible at three-footers. I then tell them I don't believe them and that they are not properly aligning themselves or they are not striking the ball into the hole.

The reasoning behind the high success rate of tour players on their shorter putts is that they take one of the two variables out of play. The harder you strike your putt, the less effect any type of slope will have on your ball. Amateurs tend to let the ball barely roll into the hole, allowing the slope of the green to greatly affect its outcome. Tour players on the other hand add additional speed and take any potential break out of the putt.

Here's a great drill to work on next time you're at CGC: make a circle with golf balls three feet from the hole and hit each putt and see how many go in. Then, place the balls in the same spot and putt each one with excessive speed. The ball should actually hit the back of the hole before it hits the bottom of the cup.

You will quickly build confidence by making more short putts and reducing your total putts per round!
