    QUICK TIP:
3 Easy Steps to Better Scoring

Improving your short game is the fastest and best way to improve your scoring. The more you simplify getting up and down by using simple techniques, the better your chances of saving your par.

Know your greens. Define your target area. Select a shot and take a simple stroke to play it.

    1. Define the Target Area
When preparing to play a short shot, whether a chip, pitch or lob, designate a target area that will leave you with the easiest putt (generally below the hole) so that you have a straightforward uphill putt that allows you to be aggressive.

    2. Select the shot
Follow a general rule to keep the ball as close to the ground whenever possible. The sooner you get the ball rolling, the sooner you are on a predictable surface that will accommodate a less-than-perfect shot.

The idea is to use basically the same short game swing for any shot. If you need to hit it higher, use a sand or lob wedge to get more loft naturally without having to make major adjustments to your stroke. For more roll, go to a less lofted iron such as an 8-iron.

Sometimes, it is easier to roll a ball up on the green than to fly it onto the edge with little margin for error. Work backward from your target area and go with the shot that makes the most sense. Don't try to get fancy, play the percentages.

    3. The Short Game Stroke
There's no reason to over-complicate the stroke. If you have a little shot to make, make a little stroke. The only real goal of the stroke is to hit the ball squarely on the clubface. If you have prepared well, the rest will take care of itself.

The short game stroke is all about tempo and speed. Everyone has a tendency to decelerate through the ball, so avoid this by choking down and taking a shorter backswing. Break your wrists as you take the club away, keeping your right elbow close to your side. Make a smooth transition between the backswing and the downswing. Imagine that you are just changing gears from reverse going back, and then simply placing the downswing into first gear going forward. Then, just keep your head behind the ball and concentrate on contacting the ball first.
